How to Transition Your Skin from Summer to Fall

As the seasons change, so does your skin. That means your skincare routine that worked for you in the warmer months may not be so effective when fall and winter are in full swing in Northern Kentucky or the Cincinnati area. Temperature and humidity play a big role in your skin’s overall health and appearance. Although you likely have your favorite products that you’ve used as long as you can remember, you may want to consider stepping your routine up a notch as the temperature outside creeps down and the thermostats in our homes and offices head in the opposite direction.

Think of it this way – just as you trade in your tank tops and flip flops for sweaters and boots in the cooler months, your skincare routine needs some modifications as well. For instance, summer weather requires lighter products and more concentration on exfoliation due to increased oil and sweat, while fall and winter bring a drop in humidity and subsequently much drier skin. Combine that with the harsh, dry heat from fireplaces and heaters, and the natural moisture of your skin essentially vanishes.

But by adapting your routine a bit and being vigilant in combatting the effects of the cold to your skin, you can enjoy a healthy glow all season long. Here are a few helpful tips to get you started on the way to a beautiful complexion that no cold blast can freeze away.

Try to resist those long, hot showers.

We know there are few things more appealing during a cold snap than a long, hot, steamy shower. But consistently taking hot showers isn’t doing your skin any favors when there’s a nip in the air. That hot water is actually repelling your skin’s natural oils and robbing it of the moisture it needs to shine. Try limiting your time in the shower and bumping the water temp down a few notches. Even if you have a few extra shivers when you step out from behind the shower curtain, your skin will thank you in the long run. Also, be sure to pat dry with a towel rather than rub, as rubbing can irritate the skin.

 Switch out your cleanser.

A lightweight foaming cleanser probably did the trick during the spring and summer months, but when the crisp, stale air creeps in, it’s time to find a product that can really lock in moisture and do the trick of cleansing without stripping your skin of its protective oils. Avoid cleansers with high acid content during fall and winter and choose gentle, moisture-rich cream-based cleansers instead.

Stock up with a thicker, richer moisturizer.

That lightweight, oil-free moisturizer you smeared on during the summer probably won’t cut it in a big cooldown. When the chill in the air zaps the moisture right out of your skin, it’s time to break out the big guns with heavier hydration. A cream containing ceramides, lipids that help the skin retain a healthy moisture level, is generally a good pick for cooler, dryer air. Just remember to apply it morning and night immediately after cleansing, which is when the skin is most apt to lock in the most moisture.

Update your nighttime beauty routine.

If your skin craves a little extra when the thermometer drops, you may want to consider adding an overnight renewal product to boost your skin’s hydration while you sleep. Apply an overnight renewal cream with retinol just before bed and wake up to refreshed, replenished skin with the added benefit of diminished fine lines and wrinkles.
